The city of El Segundo is located on the Santa Monica Bay, just south of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). It’s home to an estimated population of almost 17,000 people, covering a land area of nearly 5.5 square miles.
Incorporated in 1917, El Segundo is Spanish for “the second.” The city earned its name as the site of the second Standard Oil refinery on the West Coast. Years later during World War II, the Douglas Aircraft Company operated a plant in El Segundo as a major wartime manufacturing facility. The same site remains an aircraft plant to this day, now operated by Northrop Grumman. El Segundo won an award in 2006 as the most business-friendly city in L.A. County.
